A fibre-optic outage often brings an entire business to a halt: no Internet, no telephony, no access to online tools. Before panicking, a few simple checks can save precious time.

The most common causes

First reflexes (before the intervention)

  1. Check the ONT/box indicators: a red or off optical light often indicates a loss of signal.
  2. Restart the equipment (ONT, router) once, cleanly.
  3. Check that the optical cables are properly connected and not pinched.
  4. Determine whether the outage is general (several sites/neighbours) or local to your premises.

Never pull on a fibre cable and never look at the end of a live fibre: the laser is invisible and dangerous to the eyes.

When to call a technician

If the optical signal is absent on the business side, if the connectors are damaged or if the outage persists after these checks, a fibre technician is needed. With the right measuring equipment (OTDR reflectometer), the break is located and the service restored quickly.
